ShortStop: SAVING SUPERMAN
ShortStop is a series of posts spotlighting some of my favorite shorts, sometimes individually but often grouped thematically, from the 40k+ I have watched. And, sometimes, with a little help from my friends.
Every year, I personally review over 2,500 shorts to determine the 100 or so that will screen at the Movie Crush. And every year, there are typically 5-10 shorts that I do not program, simply because they do not quite fit, either temporally or thematically. One title from this past summer that didn’t find its way into our line-up was SAVING SUPERMAN, which has screened “at more than 60 festivals — including 18 Oscar-qualifying events — and winning over 10 awards, the most of any documentary short in its year.”
The documentary, directed by Adam Oppenheim and Samuel-Ali Mirpoorian, is a tribute to an autistic individual with superhero aspirations and attire, who is beloved by many in his Chicago suburb. When he faces the possibility of being forced to leave his home, neighbors band together to “save” Jonathan. The movie is a definite crowd-pleaser and is now available to watch via Switchboard Magazine online. To increase its odds of earning an Oscar® nomination, SAVING SUPERMAN has landed a whale; Oscar®-winner Brendan Fraser has come on board as an Executive Producer.
Watch the short and, please, tell me what you think. And, I would love to hear about any shorts you think I should have programmed for previous Crushes.
Feature films are my Kryptonite,
